What happens when you bring together what you’re good at and what you’re passionate about? You find your unique spark—the thing that makes you come alive, sets you apart, and guides your path forward.
But what if you’re not sure what those things are? The clues are already within you.
A Journey to Rediscovering Myself
I’ll never forget a moment in my 30s when I took a course called The Science of Happiness. It was run by a dynamic, forward-thinking couple who taught personal development concepts backed by research about what creates joy and fulfillment. It was also my first introduction to meditation and tapping into intuition—ideas that were brand new to me at the time.
One of the exercises was to write down my passions. I stared at the page, blank. I couldn’t think of a single thing. The only thought that popped into my head was, I’m good at shopping. (Yes, really!) I was so disconnected from myself that I didn’t know what I loved, what I was good at, or even what truly interested me. I was running on autopilot.
But that moment stuck with me, and over time, I started to unravel the mystery by asking myself questions like:
- What lights me up?
- What piques my curiosity?
- What makes me angry or fired up? These are often indicators of the causes or values you care about deeply.
- What tasks or activities allow me to lose myself? Pay attention to the things that make time disappear—the moments when you’re so focused that you lose track of everything else.
- What do I naturally gravitate toward when I have free time?
Slowly, I started to see patterns emerge:
- My passion for my young family and the life I wanted to create for them.
- A deep desire to be free from the constraints of the corporate 9-5 world and build a business of my own.
- My love for healthy living and the way I felt discomfort (and sometimes anger) when I was out of balance.
- My constant curiosity to understand others—what drives them, their goals, and their dreams.
- My fascination with business owners and the way they could grow their businesses by keeping their customers at the heart of their decisions.
These weren’t random interests, ”they were clues”. Together, they pointed me toward building the business and leadership style I have today, one rooted in connection, independence, and growth.
Leaning Into Your Passion and Strengths
If you’re trying to find your unique spark, start by exploring the intersection of what you’re good at and what you care about. Reflect on these questions:
- What have others always come to me for help with?
- What tasks or conversations energize me, rather than drain me?
- What causes or ideas do I feel passionate or even angry about?
- What hobbies or activities have I loved since I was young?
Once you start to uncover these insights, don’t ignore them, “lean into them”. Explore ways to bring more of what you’re passionate about into your work and life. Let these pieces guide your decisions and your direction.
The Magic of Alignment
The magic happens when you align your passions with your strengths. This is where you’ll find your differentiator—the thing only you can bring to the world. You don’t need to follow someone else’s formula or fit into a mould. Instead, trust that your unique blend of interests, talents, and values is your superpower.
Whether you’re building a business, growing in your career, or simply trying to live a more fulfilled life, the answers aren’t outside of you. They’re already within you. You just have to listen, reflect, and trust yourself enough to follow where they lead.
